July-Turn up the Heat
July-2010
Dear Design Your Best Life Family,
Turn up the heat! Whew..It’s July here in Chicago and it has been HOT!! Although
at times it may feel uncomfortable I am still extremely grateful that it is summer
and I am cherishing each and every day regardless of the temperature :-).
After the 4th of July I reevaluate the rest of my summer because to me the
beginning of July usually marks the halfway point. Have I reached the goals I set
for the summer? Completed everything on my to do list up until this point? Do I
need to readjust any goals to match my current needs?
If I missed a goal, need to create a new goal or readjust an existing goal I TURN
UP THE HEAT and follow a 5 step process.
1. Get real on why I missed the goal to begin with. Was it something out of my
control? Was it a foreseeable obstacle? Get clear on what the issue was/is!
2. If it was a foreseeable challenge how can I account for it as well as other
obstacles in the future? Make a list of all the obstacles that I may encounter.
3. Ask myself this question-“Is my goal still attainable?” If yes, What is my next
step?
4. I now create SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable,
Realistic and Timely.
*To set a specific goal you must answer the six “W” questions:
Who: Who is involved?
What: What do I want to accomplish?
Where: Identify a location.
When: Establish a time frame.
Which: Identify requirements and constraints.
Why: Specific reasons, purpose or benefits of accomplishing the goal.
Example: A general goal would be, “Get fit.” But a specific goal would say, “Join
the gym and workout 3 days a week for a minimum of 45 minutes a day.”
*To determine if your goal is measurable you can ask questions such as: How
much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?
*Attainable-Identify the goals that are most important to you and establish a time
frame that allows you to carry out the steps.
*Realistic-are you willing and able to work towards the goal? Do you believe in the
goal?
*Timely-does it have a time frame? Is your workout goal going to be completed
within 90 days, 6 months?
5. How will I reward myself when I accomplish my goal?
Using SMART goals will help you reach your goals that much more than just
setting general goals. Working with a coach to help reach your goals also
provides more accountability by taking responsibility resulting in tangible
outcomes. To read more about setting goals feel free to read my article “Top 7
