June-Step into Balance
June 2010
Dear Design Your Best Life Family,
Wow it’s June already! How exciting and just amazing how time flies. My little girl
is going to be one in a few weeks-where does the time go?? I am super excited
that summer is here and fun plans are in the works. Trying to get things in order to
make sure I maintain some balance in my life. Speaking of balance, a topic I talk
often about what does balance look like in your life?
Are you spending your precious energy trying to figure out a way to balance your
life? Do you make any choices in your life that do not support your values and
priorities? Are you managing your priorities the way you should be?
When thinking about life balance it is important to define what balance means for
you RIGHT NOW in your life. For example, if you recently graduated from college
then having a demanding career may equal balance for you. You may decide to
focus on your career for several years and cut out other stuff so you can reach your
career goals. However, later on down the road spending quality time with family
may be your definition of balance. Balance changes throughout life and as we
enter various life phases our definition of balance will need to be altered.
When defining your balance you must effectively manage your priorities. We only
have 24 hours in a day so managing our time to align with our priorities is our
goal. The choices we make about our attention, energy and time should not be
based solely on other people’s demands. If at the end of the day we find
ourselves exhausted and wondering how we can get control this is a sign that we
need a structured supportive environment in place.
So how do we create this structure? We need to manage our calendars to what
matters to us and put a system in place that allows us to take consistent action
every day focused on our priorities. The first step in helping define your priorities is
to reflect on what is TRULY important to you. Make a list that reflects who you are
not what other people expect of you. Make a list that reflects both your professional
and personal lives. Spend some time making this list and revisit it often. Our
priorities will change over time so it is vital to be sure we are focusing on the most
important priorities at the present time.
