“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually
fearing you will make one.”
~Elbert Hubbard

Dear,
I hope you are enjoying the fall. I know I certainly am-I love this time of year!
However, I know winter is around the corner and I am a little fearful of what’s in
store…. In Chicago you just never know what type of winter it’s going to be. It could
be mild but many times it has been pretty brutal so I guess we will have to wait and
see 

Speaking of being fearful I thought the above quote really summed it up. I think
there are times in our lives when we are afraid and for that reason we make the
choice to stay right where we are. Maybe we afraid of taking that next step, afraid
of making a change, afraid to speak up, afraid that we are just not good enough,
afraid of failure and the list can go on and on. For me personally, I was definitely
afraid to leave everything that was familiar to me and start my business. I thought
about all the ways it wasn’t going to work. That inner voice in my head kept telling
me it was not the right time and it wouldn’t work out. This voice is what we call “The
Saboteur.” It is the inner critic that prevents you from moving forward. Somehow
we rationalize or talk ourselves out of taking that risk which prevents us from
fulfillment.

Think about it? Was there a time you felt afraid and as a result did not move
forward and it ultimately made you unhappy or unfulfilled? You were so scared of
either failing or it not working out that you created an absolute truth in your mind
and decided that it was impossible to take the risk; it just was out of the question.

So what can we do about this inner critic or fear that is compromising our
happiness? First and foremost, we must identify this fear. As I mentioned earlier,
we have become so fearful that we now have made it an absolute truth instead of
realizing it is just our fear. We must understand what is holding us back and
pinpoint our fear. Once we can identify our fear we can strategize on ways to
overcome it.

One way you can identify your fear is to write it down. Take 15 minutes to write
about one of your “saboteurs” or fears.  Name it and describe how it affects you.
Think about how this fear has held you back and what is present or not present in
your life due to this fear. Spend the next week noticing how many times your
“saboteur” affects your actions.

Now that you have identified your fear and better understand that inner voice in
your head that is holding you back name five ways you could challenge your fear
or saboteur. Take a few weeks and think about what you could say or do instead.
For example, if “not having enough time” has held you back from taking risks or
changing your situation maybe you need to think of creative ways to find time.
Keep a log and notice where you waste time. Break down the activity into smaller,
more achievable parts. After spending time discovering ways to overcome this
saboteur you will realize that you do have extra time and can finally do what you
have been putting off. It is amazing what you will find once you spend the time and
energy to identify your fear and work through it. This isn’t to say your fear will be
completely removed but now you understand your fear better and have the power
to overcome it!

Well that is it for now. Remember, fear is a state of mind and once you come to
terms with it you can overcome anything!  “You gain strength, courage, and
confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.
You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.”- Eleanor Roosevelt
