Design Your Best Life
September 2010
Dear Design Your Best Life Family,
Welcome to Design Your Best Life Septembers’ Newsletter! Hope everyone is
doing fantastic and is settling into fall. As I move ahead into this season I am
working on establishing some new habits. Once a quarter I take stock and reflect
on my life both professionally and personally. I look at what’s working and figure
out how to make it even better. I eliminate what’s not effective and incorporate new
strategies to help create the life I want to live.
However, what I have learned over the years is that in order to add, adjust and
eliminate I must first incorporate DISCIPLINE into my life. I must admit in the past
when I would hear the word “discipline” I would initially think absence of freedom.
But in reality being disciplined allows you more freedom in your life. As Stephen R.
Covey once wrote, “the undisciplined are slaves to moods, appetites and
passions.”
So what about you? What comes to your mind when hear the word discipline. Are
you like many people who experience an unpleasant feeling in the pit of your
stomach when thinking about discipline? In the past (and sometimes even
currently) discipline has been a weakness of mine. However, through creating
good habits and keeping my eye on my ultimate goal I have become a better
person through discipline. If you struggle with discipline the good news is that it
can be developed. Below are a few steps you can take to help incorporate more
discipline into your life.
1) Self-knowledge--take some time for reflection and introspection. Get clear on
what it is your want and write out your goals, dreams and values. Gaining more
awareness into who you are and what you value will allow you to align your
actions according to what truly matters.
2) Cut out distractions. To help you stay on task and avoid slipping back into old
patterns be sure to eliminate distractions. Whether its checking email, surfing the
net, watching television, talking to a neighbor or even internal distractions
(thoughts such as “I’m hungry for a snack”) they are time suckers and prevent you
from reaching your goal.
3) Structure your tasks. Take inventory of what needs to be done to meet your
needs. Physically, emotionally AND mentally. Write down every to-do in your mind
and be sure to separate the ones that really need to be completed with the ones
that don’t.
4) Prioritize. If we know what we want and what is important to us it is imperative
that we schedule our calendars according to our priorities. If you have structured
your tasks then prioritizing them to what really matters will help us stay more
disciplined.
5) Challenge yourself. In order to build self-discipline it is important to keep
challenging yourself. Be sure to choose challenges that take you out of your
comfort zone and force you to stretch BUT make sure they are also realistic. Be
careful not to choose challenges that are nearly impossible to complete.
