The STRONG interest inventory is designed to identify general interests and occupations that may
appeal to you. Millions of people have used the Strong Interest Inventory in guiding themselves
through exploring careers and college majors. This career planning instrument measures your
interests to help identify your optimum career choice and increase your overall life and career
satisfaction. Research suggests that people tend to be happier and more productive in jobs or
careers that align with their interests.

The Strong interest inventory reveals interest patterns on 4 scales including Holland’s codes (RIASEC):

General Occupational Themes (GOT)

Broad interest patterns
Correspond to Holland’s codes (RIASEC) (He thought people can be grouped into six
different types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising and Conventional.)

Basic Interest Scale

Specific interests (identify potential career areas, major, field of study, and leisure activities)

Occupational Scale

Relates your interest patterns with those of satisfied individuals working in certain
occupations

Personal Style Scales

Style of working, learning, leading, risk taking, and team participation

Strong Interest Inventory

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a psychometric questionnaire that is the best known and
most widely used personality assessment in the world. The assessment is backed by numerous
research studies illustrating the reliability and validity in assessing personality. The MBTI instrument
provides an accurate picture of an individual’s personality type and brings insight into how people
perceive the world, gather information and make decisions. Developed by Isabel Briggs Myers, and
her mother Katharine Briggs the MBTI can bring insight into how you communicate and interact with
others. Using this assessment as a tool can align your career and personal life with your unique type.

Based on Psychologist Carl Jung’s work on psychological types, the MBTI identifies preferences on four dichotomies:

Extroversion-Introversion: describes people who tend to focus on either the outer world of
people/things or the inner world of ideas/impressions.

Sensing–Intuition: describes people who take in information either through focusing on the present
and gained from their senses or those who focus on the future and have a view toward patterns and
possibilities.

Thinking-Feeling: describes how people make decisions either by thinking on logical analysis or
feeling on values and subjective evaluation.

Judging-Perceiving: describes how people approach life either through a planned and organized
approach or a flexible and spontaneous approach.

A combination of the above preferences are formed to create your own personality type description.
There are 16 types and each has its own unique pattern of preferences describing your
characteristics and outlining inherent strengths as well as blind spots. Although your determined type
does not predict success nor establish intelligence it does help us discover what motivates and
empowers us!

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

MBTI is used for....

To share an example of the characteristics associated with each type you can read my
determined type: ENTP. According to Myers, P.B. & Myers, K.D. (1998), MBTI, Form M.

ENTP’s (Extraverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceiving) are:
Quick, ingenious, stimulating, alert, and outspoken. Resourceful in solving new and challenging
problems. Adept at generating conceptual possibilities and then analyzing them strategically. Good
at reading other people. Bored by routine, will seldom do the same thing the same way, apt to turn
to one new interest after another.
